Without families there is no community. Without good moms, families don’t have a starting chance. Working in my community gives me hope and reminds me that moms have a very unique place in our communities as the caretakers, not just of the children, but also of the marketplace and the greenspaces. This is where I shine.
Gardening is both passion and peace for me. Over the last 3 years, I’ve been awarded 3 community-centered grants to continue the work of brightening one of the blighted corners in my neighborhood.
Welcome Corner was once a vacant lot crowded by garbage and overgrown weeds. It is now equipped with a Free Library, benches, beautiful flowers and garden beds. The Sprout Fund, G-Tech and Observatory Hill Inc. have all aided me in making this space a welcoming space for families of the North Side.
My community efforts have also been written about in local media.
